Texas Expansion Update - 1st Quarter 2016
Our capital campaign to expand the Houston Study Centers has now raised $12.1 million out of a goal of $15 million!
Our expansion plans are already in the implementation phase, as we continue to receive pledges and donations.
Sheridan Study Center Program Spotlight
Cooking, dusting, and the death penalty were all topics of discussion for the middle school girls at Creative Cuisine’s February 6 session. The girls filled the kitchen with the aroma of fresh-baked scones, accompanied by strawberry butter. They received practical instruction on cleaning without harsh chemicals using microfiber cloths. And during their spiritual formation session, they engaged in lively discussion of the fifth commandment, “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” with all the implications it has for both daily life and a number of modern issues. Creative Cuisine helps girls learn life skills, self-confidence, and character, with hands-on classes and practical talks on Christian living that help develop a sound moral and ethical worldview.
Sheridan Construction Update
The new Sheridan Study Center at 2222 Bellefontaine Street is really coming along! The new center will provide plenty of space for girls’ programs such as the Art of Living, Creative Cuisine, and University Boulevard. Sheridan plans to add new hospitality and leadership training programs, including seminars on issues such as family, education, and marriage. It will also more comfortably house the ten residents of the current Sheridan Center. We expect the building to be ready for move-in this fall.
Chaucer/ Swift Study Center Program Spotlight
On February 13, 50 young men attended The Grade, our monthly leadership development program for high schoolers. Participants engaged in a philosophical discussion on freedom and responsibility, learned about careers in the teaching profession, got tips on a healthy approach to dating, learned about the responsibilities of fatherhood, and practiced extemporaneous speaking skills. In addition to monthly group sessions such as this, all participants in The Grade meet regularly with mentors to help in their development and formation.
Westcott Construction Update
Construction of the new Westcott Study Center for men is now underway. We received permission for site preparation in November/ December last year, and construction drawings were approved in January. We’ve now begun laying the foundation. The center is expected to be completed in November 2016; it will provide space to serve additional men and boys with leadership development and training programs.
